ABEOKUTA, OGUN STATE — Daily Post correspondent in Ogun State, Gift Oba, has emerged Treasurer of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun State Council.
Oba, a vibrant and dedicated journalist recognised for her consistency, professionalism and active participation in the activities of the chapel, emerged during the leadership transition held on Wednesday in Abeokuta.
She will oversee the financial administration of the chapel under the new executive led by Comrade Yetunde Fatungase of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), who emerged as Chairperson.
Other members of the executive are Hakeem Adegbenro of Blueprint, Secretary; Lauretta Oaihimire of Standard Times, Financial Secretary; and Kola Olayinka of Business NG, Assistant Secretary.
The new executive was inaugurated by the Chairman of the Ogun State Council of the NUJ, Wale Olanrewaju, at the chapel’s secretariat.
In her acceptance speech, Fatungase, a Senior Editor with NAN, pledged to lead with fairness, transparency, humility and respect for all members.
She stressed that leadership was not about occupying a position but about serving those who entrusted the responsibility to the leadership.
Fatungase acknowledged some of the challenges confronting the chapel, including grievances among members, and called for unity, constructive criticism and professionalism.
“We may not always agree on every issue, but we can disagree without bitterness, personal attacks or division,” she said.
She further emphasised the need for inclusiveness and dialogue, saying there was room for every member to contribute to the progress of the association.
“There is room for everyone at the table, and together, through mutual respect and genuine dialogue, we can move this association forward,” Fatungase said.
Also speaking, Olanrewaju charged the new executive to prioritise unity and strengthen the relationship between the Correspondents’ Chapel and the Ogun State Council.
“What do we need from you? Unity. There’s no rivalry between council and the chapel,” he said.
The NUJ chairman urged the new leadership to build stronger relationships with other chapels and ensure that the Correspondents’ Chapel was not used as a platform for personal ego.
“If the Correspondents’ Chapel supports the council, we will hold powers to account,” Olanrewaju added.
