The Senate has resumed plenary after its annual recess, with President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, calling for urgent action to address insecurity, flooding and the rising cost of living across the country.
Addressing lawmakers on their return, Akpabio expressed concern over recent cases of abduction, particularly those reported in Marisa and at Dekera Mosque.
He urged security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue Nigerians still in captivity and strengthen security around vulnerable communities, stressing that expressions of sympathy alone would not resolve the country’s security challenges.
The Senate President also charged political and economic leaders to ensure that ongoing reforms translate into tangible improvements in the lives of Nigerians.
As preparations begin ahead of the 2027 general elections, Akpabio appealed to political actors to embrace peaceful and issue-based campaigns, warning against actions that could threaten lives and undermine national stability.
He stressed that political contests should never come at the cost of human lives.
Meanwhile, the Senate considered six communications from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during its resumed sitting.
The communications included requests for confirmation of appointments, approval of the 2026 statutory budget of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), as well as bills seeking to establish new institutions.
One of the legislative proposals seeks to establish the National Research and Development Fund.
The communications and bills were subsequently referred to the relevant Senate committees for further consideration.
The Senate also observed a moment of mourning in honour of former Kogi State Governor, Ibrahim Idris, and the late Emir of Gumel, Ahmed Muhammad Sani.
The resumption marks the return of legislative activities as senators begin consideration of pending national matters and fresh requests before the chamber.
