The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is facing renewed political uncertainty following the reported defection of Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, a development that leaves only two governors — Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed — elected on the party’s platform.
Reacting to the situation, Makinde described the development as a difficult moment for both the party and Nigeria’s democratic process, warning that the current political climate presents unusual challenges.
Speaking in Abuja, the Oyo governor said discussions with seasoned political stakeholders indicate that the country is experiencing an unprecedented political shift.
According to him, “I have been talking to people with deep knowledge of Nigeria’s political evolution, and many say they have never witnessed a political environment like the one we are seeing today.”
Makinde urged party leaders and members to be mindful of the role they play during the period, stressing that history will judge their actions and decisions.
He noted that whatever steps the party takes now would have long-term consequences for its survival and relevance, calling on members to set aside differences and focus on rebuilding the party.
Despite the setback, the governor expressed optimism that the PDP would overcome the challenges.
“Weeping may endure for the night, but joy comes in the morning,” he said, expressing confidence that the party would recover from the current crisis.
Lawal’s exit has triggered fresh concerns about the PDP’s future, with some observers warning that the development could weaken the party further. However, a faction within the party led by Turaki has dismissed fears of collapse, insisting that the PDP remains strong and will participate fully in the 2027 general elections.
Political analysts say the latest development raises questions about the party’s internal cohesion and its ability to retain remaining members and governors.
While Makinde’s remarks are seen as an effort to rally party faithful and boost morale, observers believe the party must take decisive steps to address its internal divisions.
Meanwhile, the situation could present an opportunity for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to consolidate its political advantage, as the PDP grapples with its internal challenges.
With the party already battling leadership disputes and internal disagreements, Lawal’s defection is widely viewed as another significant setback to its efforts to project unity ahead of future elections.
As events continue to unfold, political watchers say the coming months will be crucial in determining whether the PDP can stabilise and reposition itself within Nigeria’s political landscape.
