The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Sapaade, has clarified the circumstances surrounding a security incident that occurred on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, confirming that five students were abducted during an attack on a private hostel off campus.
In a press statement issued on Thursday, the union said the incident happened at about 7:45 p.m. when suspected armed bandits invaded a private student hostel located along Paraga Road, Ipara.
According to the SUG, the hostel is situated in a remote area surrounded by thick bushes, making it vulnerable to security threats and unsuitable as a safe residential environment for students.
The union disclosed that the attack lasted for about 30 minutes, adding that the isolated location of the hostel prevented nearby residents from responding promptly despite the gunshots fired by the attackers.
It noted that although several students escaped through the building’s POP ceiling during the attack, others were unable to flee. The union, however, confirmed that no life was lost in the incident.
“The Students’ Union Government can confirm that five students were abducted during the attack. The matter has been officially reported to the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant security agencies, and we are confident that immediate efforts are underway to ensure the safe rescue of the affected students,” the statement read.
The SUG also dismissed reports circulating on social media, describing them as false, exaggerated and unverified.
While acknowledging that the attack occurred, the union said many of the online reports do not accurately reflect the facts and have only created unnecessary fear and panic within the school community.
It urged students, parents, guardians and members of the public to remain calm and rely only on verified information from the institution, the Students’ Union Government and relevant security agencies.
The union also advised students seeking off-campus accommodation to choose hostels located in secure and well-populated areas while avoiding isolated locations that could expose them to security risks.
Reaffirming its commitment to the welfare of students, the SUG said it is working closely with the school management and security agencies to ensure the safe return of the abducted students.
“The Students’ Union Government stands in solidarity with the affected students and their families. We remain committed to working closely with the school management and security agencies until the abducted students are safely reunited with their loved ones,” the statement added.
