The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), South-West Zone, has demanded the immediate arrest and prosecution of the armed robbers responsible for the murder of a final-year student at D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic, Itori.
The victim was killed during an early-morning robbery on July 27, sparking outrage and renewed calls for comprehensive security measures around student communities across Ogun State.
A delegation led by NANS South-West Coordinator, Comrade Josiah Adeyemo Kayode, including the Ogun State Joint Campus Committee (JCC) Chairman, Comrade Farouk, and the institution’s Students’ Union Government (SUG) President visited the polytechnic to sympathize with the student body and management.
Speaking during the visit, Adeyemo described the killing as a devastating loss to the entire Nigerian student body and urged government officials to treat campus security as a critical emergency.
“Students deserve to learn in a peaceful and secure environment. Protecting students and educational institutions should remain a top priority for both the government and security agencies.”
Adeyemo appealed directly to the Inspector-General of Police, the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, and Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun to urgently deploy security personnel to student-dense off-campus neighborhoods.
The student leadership also paid a courtesy visit to the Eleruku of Eruku Kingdom, Oba Ajagungbade Gbadewolu Atobatele, to discuss community-level protection for off-campus residents.
The monarch explained that he contacted the police immediately after receiving news of the attack. While security personnel responded quickly, the assailants had already fled the scene
To prevent further occurrences, Oba Atobatele confirmed he has deployed ten local security operatives to bolster surveillance and safeguard residents in the area
Meeting with the delegation, the Rector of D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic, Dr. Goke Rauf, expressed deep sorrow over the loss and reassured student leaders that management is actively addressing security vulnerabilities.
Dr. Rauf announced several strategic measures aimed at improving student welfare and safety:
The institution will begin construction on new student hostels to reduce dependence on vulnerable off-campus housing.
Security arrangements across the campus perimeter and surrounding areas will be strengthened.
Internal roads will be rehabilitated alongside new welfare programs to establish a safer, more conducive learning environment.
The NANS delegation commended the management’s proposals, stressing that prompt implementation remains vital to protecting lives and restoring confidence among the student body.
