Gunmen have killed and beheaded a 30-year-old farmer, Elisha Saku, in Riwhie-Chwo, Nzharuvo, Miango District of Bassa Local Government Area, Plateau State, triggering fresh panic in the community.
Residents said the attackers stormed the area around 10pm on Thursday, forcing locals to flee amid chaos and renewed fears over persistent violence.
The Irigwe Youth Movement confirmed the killing on Friday, describing it as brutal and urging authorities to act swiftly while calling for calm. Its National Publicity Secretary, Joseph Yonkpa, said the victim was ambushed and beheaded during the нападение.
Efforts to get a response from security agencies were unsuccessful, as the spokesman of the Plateau State Police Command, Alabo Alfred, could not be reached as of press time.
The incident adds to a string of attacks in Bassa LGA, where farming communities have faced repeated violence, leading to deaths, displacement, and disruption of livelihoods.
Residents say the latest killing has heightened fear, especially among farmers who rely on night movements to safeguard their farmlands during the planting season. They are calling for increased patrols and a permanent security presence.
Community leaders have also urged federal and state authorities to strengthen security in Miango, warning that continued attacks without arrests are emboldening perpetrators and undermining public confidence.
