The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has disclosed that the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN), in collaboration with United States troops, is intensifying efforts to combat insecurity across the country, expressing confidence that the partnership will soon yield visible results.
Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Michael Onoja, said the collaboration involves intelligence sharing and specialised training designed to strengthen the operational capacity of Nigerian forces in addressing evolving security threats.
He noted that while some aspects of the cooperation remain confidential due to the sensitive nature of ongoing operations nationwide, early indicators suggest progress is being made.
According to him, the impact of the U.S. support may not be immediate, but Nigerians should expect noticeable improvements in security outcomes in the coming weeks and months.
Onoja assured citizens that there was no cause for alarm, stressing that the military remains firmly in control of the situation across various theatres of operation.
On preparations for the Easter celebrations, he revealed that troops have been placed on high alert across the country to prevent any potential security breaches, noting that festive periods often attract heightened threats.
He emphasised that the military would not relax its vigilance, as criminal elements tend to exploit such periods, adding that proactive measures have already been activated nationwide.
Highlighting operational achievements in the first quarter of 2026, Onoja said troops recorded significant successes, including the elimination of several terrorist leaders, the arrest of over 1,300 suspects, and the rescue of more than 800 kidnapped victims.
He added that hundreds of insurgents surrendered, while security forces recovered large quantities of arms, ammunition, and stolen petroleum products, alongside dismantling numerous illegal refining sites.
The DHQ spokesman also pointed to the confirmed death of a senior ISWAP leader as evidence of the sustained pressure being mounted on terrorist groups by Nigerian forces.
Reaffirming the military’s commitment to professionalism, Onoja stated that all operations are conducted in line with international humanitarian laws and established rules of engagement.
He further conveyed the appreciation of the Chief of Defence Staff, Olufemi Oluyede, to troops for their dedication and sacrifice, as well as to other security agencies, the media, and the public for their continued support.
Onoja also urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities, stressing that public cooperation remains crucial in the ongoing fight against insecurity.
