The Yobe State Police Command has uncovered a shallow grave in Damaturu, believed to contain the remains of a suspected homicide victim.
The Command condemned the disturbing incident and alerted the public to the discovery, describing it as a serious case of suspected culpable homicide.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Dungus Abdulkarim, said the grave was discovered on March 21, 2026, at about 2:10 p.m. by operatives of ‘A’ Divisional Police Headquarters in the Madinatu Alimarami Extension Ward of Damaturu.
He explained that earlier the same day, around 9:00 a.m., the police received a report about a lifeless body buried in a shallow grave, with the legs exposed and the corpse already in an advanced stage of decomposition.
Police officers, alongside medical personnel from the General Hospital Damaturu, visited the scene for examination. Preliminary findings showed no visible signs of struggle or external injuries on the body.
However, investigators observed tyre marks near the site, suggesting the corpse may have been transported and dumped at the location.
The remains have since been released to the community for burial. Despite the absence of obvious injuries, the police said foul play is strongly suspected and a full-scale investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the death, identify the victim, and apprehend those responsible.
The Command urged residents with reports of missing persons in Damaturu and surrounding areas to visit the nearest police station for possible identification. It also called on the public to provide credible information that could aid the investigation.
The police reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the safety of residents and vowed to bring those behind the crime to justice.
